Skincare Guide

Our bodies are genetically predisposed to a specific skin type.  However this can change with our age, the climate and seasons.  Choosing organic products that work in harmony with your skin type, will help to achieve radiant and healthy skin.   Consistency is the key to seeing results.  Caring for your skin daily, both in the morning and the evening is necessary to maintain your best skin possible.

Definitions

Acid Mantle:  There is a protective layer on human skin called the acid mantle.  It’s a thin, acidic barrier that helps to maintain the skin’s pH balance, and keep bacteria out.  The acid mantle can be removed by using harsh soaps or sun damage.  When this happens, skin reacts with inflammation (rashes, breakouts, infections) or by producing an excessive amount of oil.

Cleanse: The purpose of cleansing your skin is to remove excess oils, makeup or dirt that has built up on your face over the course of the day or night.  It’s vitally important to GENTLY cleanse your skin so the acid mantle (defined above) isn’t disrupted.

Tone: Traditionally, “toners” were used to remove excess makeup or as an astringent to tighten pores.  Experts agree that toners are not necessary.  Our creamy cleansers are effective on their own, and astringents only dry out the skin and do nothing to help balance the pH.   However, Pure Anada  “toners” are different.  They are hydrating facial mists which infuse water into the skin cells with aloe, and plant hydrosols.  They can be used as a part of your skincare regime, or as setting sprays when applying mineral makeup.

Hydrate: Hydrating your skin means to infuse it with WATER.  Hydrating your skin from the inside, by drinking water,  is vitally important.  It’s also important to hydrate your skin from the outside, especially in dry climates and cold seasons.  Plant hydrosols and aloe juice are great hydrators when applied to the skin directly.

Moisturize:  Moisturizing your skin means to infuse it with OIL.  Each body produces its own oil to varying degrees.  A lipid (oil) barrier on the skin prevents water from escaping.  Our skin recognizes plant oils, and receives them as nourishing food to keep the texture of your skin soft, and supple.  This is a huge benefit to using organic/natural skincare products.  Traditional skincare products are mainly comprised of silicones or petro-chemicals which coat the skin with a protective barrier, but do nothing to nourish and feed your skin cells.

Normal Skin

Normal skin is balanced.  It feels neither too oily nor too dry.  A slight oily sheen may appear in the T-zone by mid-day or occasional blemishes, but for the most part, normal skin is the least problematic.

1) Cleanse:  Use a gentle, creamy cleanser which will whisk away excess oil and makeup without disrupting the skin’s delicate pH balance.

Recommendations:  Any of the Pure Anada Cleansers are suitable to use on a daily basis (morning and evening): Scentless Gentle Cleanser, Lavender Chamomile Calming Cleanser, Lemongrass Citrus Refreshing Cleanser and the Cucumber Aloe Eye Makeup Remover.  The Fruit Enzyme Exfoliating Cleanser can be safely used; once or twice a week or as needed.

2) Hydrate: Hydration is the key to maintaining the balance you already have throughout the changing seasons.

Recommendations: Marine Mineral Hydrating Toner,  which contains organic aloe juice or Smooth Priming Serum which contains calming Chamomile Hydrosol.  Both include hyaluronic acid which helps to plump skin cells with water with it’s ability to hold 1000 times its weight in water.

3) Moisturize: A lightweight moisturizer is all that is needed during the day, with a more intensive product at night-time, only in dehydrating seasons or climates.

Recommendations for AM:  Green Tea & Grapeseed Daily Moisturizer is a lightweight, fast absorbing moisturizer that makes a perfect primer/base for makeup.  If a boost of moisture is needed during cold or dry seasons, Berry & Bouquet Hydrating Cream is a fantastic alternative.

Recommendations for PM: Either of the moisturizers mentioned above can also be used in the evening.  If your skin still feels dry or tight, then consider supplementing your moisturizer with the Repair Luxury Treatment which is a balancing skincare oil.  One or two drops applied prior to your moisturizer is all you need.

4) Treatments: Recommendations for mature/aging skin: Feel free to incorporate specialized treatments such as our Awake Eye Gel into your morning and evening routine.  Replacing your evening moisturizer with Revive Moisturizing Serum (our best-selling skincare product) is highly suggested.

Dry Skin

Dry skin is characterized by itchy, flaky or tight-feeling skin, especially after cleansing or a hot shower.  Dry skin is thin, has small pores and has reduced sebum production.  It is essentially lacking oil.  Because of this, it is more prone to fine lines and wrinkles.  Dry skin is more problematic during harsh winter months and dry climates.

1) Cleanse:  Use a gentle, creamy cleanser which will whisk away excess oil and makeup without disrupting the skin’s delicate pH balance.  Stay away from foaming, or gel-based cleansers.

Recommendations:  Scentless Gentle Cleanser, Lavender Chamomile Calming Cleanser, and the Cucumber Aloe Eye Makeup Remover are safe to use.   The Fruit Enzyme Exfoliating Cleanser can be safely used approximately once a week to remove loose skin cells.  Be careful not to over-exfoliate since dry skin is typically thinner, and prone to becoming sensitive if over-stimulated.

2) Hydrate: Dry skin isn’t necessarily dehydrated (lacking water).  However, misting your skin with Marine Mineral Toner, or Garden Facial Mist is beneficial.  These facial mists also become an asset when applying makeup to dry skin.

3) Moisturize: This is the most important step for dry skin since it is lacking its own oils.   Don’t ever neglect to nourish your skin type.  Humid summer months, will give you a chance to lighten-up your moisturizer, but for the most part, it will be best to keep your skin healthy with a rich, botanically based moisturizer.

Recommendations for AM:  Berry & Bouquet Hydrating Cream is a lovely day cream for dry skin.  Enriched with shea butter and argan oil, it is a fast absorbing cream which makes it a great base for makeup.  If a dehydrated climate still causes your skin to tighten after applying this moisturizer, then we suggest “boosting” it with a drop or two of Repair Luxury Treatment.  Repair is a blend of pure, skin-loving oils that will help to replace the oils your skin isn’t producing on its own.  A drop or two applied prior to Berry & Bouquet will work wonders.

Recommendations for PM: Start by applying a thin layer of Repair Luxury Treatment.  This blend of skin-loving oils will create a lipid barrier on your skin which will prevent moisture loss during the night.  Additionally, apply Berry & Bouquet Hydra Cream OR Revive Moisturizing Serum.

4) Treatments:  For aging or puffy eyes,  incorporate Awake Eye Gel into your morning and evening routine.

Oily Skin

Oily skin is characterized by a shiny complexion and large pores due to excessive sebum production.  Oily skin feels thicker than dry skin, and easily becomes greasy by mid-day.  Although not lacking in oils, oily skin can become dehydrated (lacking water).

1) Cleanse: Although it’s tempting to use a harsh cleanser to “cut the grease”, this will not offer a solution.  In fact, it could contribute to the problem.  When oily skin is aggressively cleansed, it reacts by producing more oil.   Creamy cleansers, or sulphate-free gel cleansers are suggested.

Recommendations: Lemongrass Citrus Refreshing Cleanser, a creamy cleanser with added citrus oils to help balance excess oils.  Or Clarity Cleanser from our Herbal Acne Solutions line. It’s important to exfoliate oily skin on a regular basis with Fruit Enzyme Exfoliating Cleanser.  Some people with oily skin enjoy it’s effects by using it as much as once a day.  The gentle jojoba beads and fruit enzymes aren’t too harsh for this thicker skin type.

2) Hydrate: Ironically, oily skin can still lack hydration.  Dehydration in oily skin manifests itself with redness, itchiness and irritation.

Apply either treatment in the morning and evening.

3) Moisturize:  It’s still important to moisturize oily skin.  A lightweight, fast-absorbing product helps to even out the porosity of the skin.

Recommendations AM: Green Tea & Grapeseed Daily Moisturizer contains anti-oxidants and grapeseed oil which acts as an astringent for oily skin types.  It makes an ideal primer for makeup application.

Recommendations PM: Green Tea & Grapeseed Daily Moisturizer should be sufficient in most climates.  During dry seasons, you may need to increase hydration at night by using the Berry & Bouquet Hydrating Cream or Revive Moisturizing Serum.

4) Treatments:   To balance excessive oil production, apply Control Herbal Tincture to your skin after cleansing, and before moisturizing.  For aging or puffy eyes,  incorporate Awake Eye Gel into your morning and evening routine.  If you are experiencing acne breakouts, it may be beneficial to transition to our Herbal Acne Solutions range: Clarity CleanserPurify Toner, and Calm Hydrator.

Combination Skin

When your skin shows signs of oiliness, especially in the T-Zone (forehead, nose and chin), yet is dry, tight and flaky on your cheeks, your skin would be classified as combination.

Recommendations for combination skin, will be the same as Normal Skin (above).  Depending on the season, take advice from our recommendations for Dry or Oily skin as well.

Focus particular treatments on specific areas of the face.  For example, apply Repair Luxury Treatment on dry patches, and/or Control Herbal Tincture on oily zones.

Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin is delicate, often drier skin that is easily irritated by certain ingredients, fragrances, environmental elements, or stimulation.  Sensitive skin types often seek out more natural/organic alternatives because of their intolerance to traditional cosmetic products.

1) Cleanse: Care should be taken to cleanse sensitive skin.  A creamy, oil based cleanser is all you should consider.  Remove your cleanser with a flat, microfiber cloth; never an exfoliating or cloth with a rough surface.

Recommendations: Scentless Gentle Cleanser or Lavender Chamomile Calming Cleanser

2) Hydrate: Sensitive, like any other skin type can become dehydrated.

3) Moisturize: Moisturizers that are made of simple ingredients, and free from even natural scents (from hydrosols or essential oils), may be what your sensitive skin needs to recover.

Recommendations AM: Scentless Daily Moisturizer is a simple formula that helps to balance sensitive skin.

Recommendations PM: Scentless Daily Moisturizer with a moisturizing boost of Repair Luxury Treatment or your favorite skincare oil will help to protect sensitive skin from reacting.  Revive Moisturizing Serum is a lovely, skin-soothing product that may help to balance your skin through the night.

4) Treatments:  For aging or puffy eyes,  incorporate Awake Eye Gel into your morning and evening routine.

Acne-Prone Skin

Although not an official “skin type”, skin that is prone to breakouts often needs specialized recommendations to keep inflammation at bay.

Our Herbal Acne Solutions range was designed to gently deep-clean and tone pores, calm and sooth inflammation, and hydrate skin, entirely with elements from nature.   If used consistently, both morning and evening, these products can dramatically improve acne-prone skin.

Aging Skin

As we age, it’s important to care for our skin and bodies from the inside-out.  Avoiding processed foods and sugar, while incorporating fresh produce and essential fatty acids is the best anti-aging advice available.

Keeping skin nourished and hydrated from the outside is also important to protect it from the sun and free-radical damage.
